We wanted to disappear for a couple of days to somewhere where no one could call in, where there are no malls, no traffic, no noise pollution!
Where could we go for some peace and quiet, just the sound of the sea, seabirds and wind rustling in the palms.
What sub-tropical paradise could we disappear to that doesn’t involve leaving the country?
There is such a place only 30 mins helicopter flight from Tauranga, nestled in close to the stunning Coromandel coast.
It’s quiet, peaceful, and boasts it’s own jetty in its own bay where you can peer at fish through crystal clear water, and listen to the gently lapping waves.
Where is this magical place?
Flying in the Bell 427 helicopter, it took only 29 minutes flight time to get there.
We stayed at Slipper Island Resort. The units are gorgeous, they are modern, clean and our host Olivia was lovely. After a night sipping wine, munching on antipasto and cheese, we sat outside in the still salty air before going to bed.
What woke us the next morning was a cacophony of nesting squawking seabirds right next to our chalet. We chose the single room option which happened to be closest to the sea.
Next we walked to the top of the hill for a 260 degree view of the Coromandel and looking down on the resort. Sheep, alpacas and cows all occupy the surrounding farmlet.
We only stayed for 72 hours, but it was a perfect place to getaway – for a couple of days away from it all.
If we decide to visit next time with family, which we will definitely will be doing, we can seat up to 7 passengers in the big flying limo (Bell 427 twin engine helicopter). We didn’t squeeze in any fishing or kayaking, those activities are on the list for next time we visit!
Coming home it felt like we’d been away for a couple of weeks – not a couple of days, we felt refreshed and lucky that we have this little hidden piece of paradise to stay at when life’s gotten a bit too chaotic and crazy! We can escape – by boat from Pauanui or by helicopter in half an hour.
If you want to book your piece of paradise, visit Slipper Island Resort chalets and glamping tents are available from $285 per night (tents are seasonal).
You can catch a water taxi to the Island from Paunaui or Call Us to enquire about arriving by helicopter.
